Understanding Emission Systems and Emission System Maintenance is important. There are lots of Myths and miss told stories out there. Emission Maintenance is probably not going away and the more you understand the easier it is to know What to Do. What Not to Do. And How to Make your life Easier.
There are Two Main Types of Diesel Particulate Filter Systems: Timed Regeneration and Soot Load Regeneration Systems. We will explain both systems and tell which models are effected and Best Practices to insure trouble free use. The more you understand the easier it will be to enjoy your tractor and operate it in the best manner to be trouble free.
A Diesel Particulate Filter is a Component of the Emission System. It is a Soot Filter that as Exhaust Gas passes throw the Pores of the Element it collects the excess soot. Soot is burned out of this element much like a Self Cleaning Oven cleans itself. Exhaust Temperatures are raised by adding diesel fuel to create heat to burn off the Soot in the Filter.
Timed Regeneration System:
Timed Regeneration Systems perform Regenerations based on time of use. In the 1700E Series approximately every 4 to 5 hours a Regeneration Occurs. The DPF Lamp will illuminate on the dash of the tractor to inform that the process is beginning to start. We recommend to raise the Engine RPM near rated PTO speed and continue working as your were. The Tractor will take control and automatically perform the regeneration process with no user input needed. You don't have to stop, unless you are in a confined space like inside a barn or working near combustible materials. Exhaust Temperatures will increase. So continuing movement will dissipate the heat. When completed approximately 30 to 45 minutes the lamp will turn off and your back to normal operation. If you prevent the regeneration process from completing the process after several times the Engine will Derate to maximum of 1500 Engine RPM. This is when you will need a Dealer Forced Regeneration and require us to perform the Regeneration with the use of Our Electronic Diagnostic Tool and most likely a visit to our service department.
What To Do: Let the Regeneration Process do it's thing. Raise Engine RPM near PTO Speed to make sure enough exhaust temperature to perform Regen.
What NOT to Do: Do not continually shut off or prevent the automatic regeneration process from happening or completion.
